Logistics and supply chain

A transport management system built from zero

End-to-end technical strategy and cloud architecture for a greenfield TMS: smart route planning, live tracking telemetry and freight automation.

A logistics operator had real scale and no platform of its own. Operations ran on spreadsheets, phone calls and three vendor systems that disagreed with each other.

The mandate

We owned the technical strategy: architecture, cloud, delivery sequence and the case to the board for each. It was a Principal Architect brief with fractional-CTO scope attached.

Design

A cloud-native transport management system, split along the operational domains the business runs on:

  • Route planning. Optimisation over live constraints instead of a nightly batch.
  • Tracking telemetry. High-volume ingest from vehicles, aggregated into one stream that operations dashboards and customer ETAs both read.
  • Freight automation. The paperwork path, automated where it is deterministic and escalated where it is not.

Why it holds

Every component deploys independently and fails independently. A telemetry backlog makes ETAs staler. It does not stop a shipment being booked. We designed that in at the boundary level, the only place it is cheap to add.
